about
Wyrd Syster, interestingly enough, was actually written in early 2020 when Keenan decided to start Acid Magus. It was, for all intents and purposes, the first Acid Magus song. We didn't even have our band name yet.
It was also an entirely different song both musically and lyrically. All that was kept from the original song were the words "Wyrd Syster" and one guitar part. EVERYTHING else was re-written.
The original work was shelved when Keenan wrote our first few singles, Fear and the Lizard People of Pretoria, Supernature and Psychonaut 1400. Psychonaut 1400 set a benchmark for the band and attracted some interest, so we set out to write our debut album (sooner than we thought we would).
The words, Wyrd Syster, never left our minds and so, with a slightly better skill set and some determination and focus, we decided to essentially "write from" that old song into a specific space. Each song just fell into place from there.
As you may or may not know, the entire album, lyrically, sets out to chastise the patriarchy and toxic masculinity, but given the somewhat abstract and highly metaphorical approach to writing lyrics, the songs are able to take on any form depending on the listener.
After completing the album around December 2020, Keenan wasn't happy with the vocal takes (after singing on the 3 singles). The album needed "more" from a vocal delivery perspective. Enter, Chris...
After sitting on the songs for a month or two we bumped into Chris and had a jam. Thank god it all went well because we might not have had this out by now otherwise haha
Over two weekends we tracked Chris' vocals, many of which were done in one take.
Save it to say, we learned a lot making this album. We have already begun the next one and aim to take all we have learned to put out something miles ahead of Wyrd Syster. Stick with us and come along for a ride!
lyrics
Crone and creature forming
Pagan frost
Night all bright and stormy
She is lost
The winds that shape this space
Wretched whisper
They etch the lines in her face
Wyrd Syster
Elemental creature
Pained to be
Mother to the preacher
They don't see
Lay them all to waste
Just a blister
Oh how it all must taste
Wyrd Syster
For some reason, what I previewed and the real songs was somewhat different - maybe because of the cover art?
But I definitely don't regret something more spacial than expected. The recent Ocean drifting in space. frankwurst
Combining crooned murder ballads with raw, angsty hard rock hooks, Melbourne's The Ugly Kings are a wrecking crew well worth watching. Bandcamp New & Notable Sep 15, 2021
Roaring space rock from this London group, with every instrument turned up to 10, and all of the songs reaching stunning crescendos. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 9, 2019
It's only four tracks, yes, but it's four tracks of great cosmic psychedelia.
